This work was inspired by the Matisse cut outs. I saved inked paper which had been used as resists for some of my poured ink paintings because of the wonderfully translucent colors.
Mary Sullivan creates "in the spirit of nature" which she experiences as boundless creativity and variety. According to Sullivan creating in the spirit of nature is a fascinating journey. A journey inspired by painter Edvard Munch's quote, "Nature is not only all that is visible to the eye . . . it also includes the inner pictures of the soul." For the past few years she has concentrated on using water media with a limited palette of permanent light fast inks or acrylics. Mary exhibits with a regional group of abstract artists, Art Beyond Tradition, and with the Art League of Hilton Head and with Maye River Gallery in Bluffton SC. Thanks, Katie. You are right. They did, however, grow out of the poured ink paintings since the paper was used as a resist for the inks and retained a lot of the ink. I couldn't pass up the beautiful translucent colors, so got into cut outs a la Henri Matisse.
