Cool Abs ... Edgy Art Exhibit

Abstract artist, Mary Sullivan, joins with 12 other members of the regional Art Beyond Tradition Abstract Group, for an exciting exhibit including her latest creations using poured inks, gold dust and a palette knife. Mary talked about her work saying "I guess I'm always trying to find my own 'edges.' Painting is a kind of travel to new and really unforeseen worlds. The process goes on as I wait for that happy moment when the whole comes together in a way that satisfies me with a sense of both recognition and mystery."

The exhibit at the Coastal Discovery Museum Gallery on Hilton Head Island opens September 3 thru November 1 with an Opening Reception on September 10 from 5-7 PM.

The painting shown is SHIFT by Mary Sullivan. She uses ink and gold dust with a palette knife. Do you feel the "shift" peaking out on the universe?

Mary Sullivan will be the featured artist at the SOBA Gallery from June 4 through July 14. She calls her exhibit “Time and Timelessness” and it will present all new work, exploring that theme with the poured ink abstracts for which she has become known. She will add two additional techniques which ultimately evolved from the ink paintings.

“My first piece in this series I call ‘Keeping Time Dancing for Joy.’ I was reminded of a dancing “figure” moving along with some timeless, joyful melody and actually it led me to consider the pursuit of the abstract concepts of time and timelessness as a theme. You could say that mine is an exploration of the ‘inner landscape’ of experience, memory, and emotion. According to Sullivan “creating in its spirit is a fascinating journey,” partly inspired by Edvard Munch’s quote, “Nature is not only all that is visible to the eye . . . it also includes the inner pictures of the soul.” In Sullivan’s exploration of abstract painting, she...
